In the 1960s natural gas was first brought ashore from the North Sea at Bacton on the far side of Norfolk. A major compressor station on the main pipeline through to central England is only a few miles away from East Walton, at East Winch.

A second line between Bacton and East Winch is being constructed during the summer of 2003. Residents of East Walton were offered an opportunity to see the construction close up.

Here villagers have been equipped with the required safety wear before being taken to see pipe being assembled and buried.
