Here the pipe had to go much deeper than the minimum 1.2m as it had to pass under the route of another existing pipe.

In this case it meant digging down to the underlying chalk sub-soil and then burrowing through under the existing pipe with an enormous corkscrew-like device. As this auger claws its way through into the soil length of pipe is passed into the hole. Here men are welding it onto the length of pipe dropped conventionally into the trench.

The same techniques is used to pass under roads or other places where it is important not to disturb the surface.
