The fence across the common was built after the area was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The gate was installed more recently. The technique of using a horizontal brace and diagonal wire in one that has only come into use in the last ten years.

The pair of cottages in the distance are on the east side of the Common, with only a single bungalow further along the track hidden behind the trees beyond the gate.
